How to Play American Mahjong: The 152-Tile Configuration, Explained

American mahjong set with 152-tile configuration, acrylic tiles

Every American mahjong set sold in North America is built around one number: 152. It's not an accident and it's not optional — it's the play configuration of the game itself. Here's exactly what those 152 tiles are, how a game flows, and why that number decides whether a set is sellable.

The 152 tiles, counted precisely

A standard American mahjong set is made up of five groups:

GroupTilesCount
Suits — Cracks, Bamboos, Dots (1–9 × 4)27 kinds × 4108
Winds — East, South, West, North4 kinds × 416
Dragons — Red, Green, White3 kinds × 412
Flowers & Seasons88
Jokers (wild tiles)88

The 8 jokers are the signature of the American game — they act as wild tiles and are central to the hand combinations on the yearly card.

How a game flows

American mahjong is played by four players. A simplified flow:

  • Seat the winds. Players draw a wind tile to assign seats; the East wind player is the dealer.
  • Build the wall. Each player builds a wall of 19 tiles in front of them (76 tiles in total), and the dealer breaks it.
  • Deal 13 tiles. Each player receives 13 tiles; the dealer draws one more for 14.
  • The Charleston. Before play begins, players pass tiles in a fixed pattern — left, right, and across — three times, to improve their hands.
  • Draw and discard. On your turn, draw a tile and discard one. Pick up discards to complete melds — pungs (three of a kind), kongs (four of a kind) and chows (sequences).
  • Win with Mahjong. Complete a hand that matches a combination from the current year's card and call "Mahjong!"

Why the tile count locks the whole set

Here's the part that matters if you buy or sell sets: the count is not negotiable per set — it's locked by the rule system. A 144-tile Chinese set won't play American mahjong. A 136-tile Hong Kong set won't either. The jokers, the flowers and the extra tiles exist for a reason, and players expect them.

That's why we build by rule system, not by country. When you order an American set from us, the 152-tile play configuration is confirmed in the spec sheet before a single tile is produced.

📖
About the yearly card. The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) annual card is a copyrighted publication that lists the year's winning combinations. We don't print, supply, or reproduce it — players buy it directly from NMJL. We produce the tiles to the standard configuration so any current card works with your set.

A note on what ships

A "152-tile set" is the play configuration. Factory-standard sets ship 160–166 tiles — the 152-tile configuration plus spare tiles — so a set always has enough for play even after a tile goes missing. If you need a different shipped count, say so, and we'll confirm it in the spec sheet.
